MQ: As you learn to awaken your most important relationships, there will arise many ways in which you can express this potential for the sake of humanity.
P: Philanthropy is just one area of life in which I can come together with others in service of our fellow man. Can you tell me a little about the possible presence of concealed conditioning here?
MQ: Yes. Magnificent gifts of time, money and resources abound in philanthropy and it seems these efforts are providing love, light and hope for millions who have little else. Any effort you make to alleviate the suffering of those less privileged is most certainly praiseworthy.
EVOLUTIONARY POINTER: Be sure that the insidious aspects of the ego are not influencing your humanitarian endeavors. Is your ‘generosity’ also consistent throughout your relevant relationships and not exclusively reserved for your charitable roles?
P: So my efforts to rescue those who struggle to survive while I am still a hapless victim of the ego-mind, albeit at a different level, is like putting out fire with gasoline3.
MQ: A true benefactor first gains objectivity on the culturally-created-self. Only then are their selfless acts—at home or across the world—free from the consequences that will sustain the suffering they seek to alleviate.
EVOLUTIONARY POINTER: To ‘give’ in your personal relationships means that your attention is primarily donated to supporting those who are not unwitting guardians of the ego-mind.
MQ: In your efforts to support the needy, the unhealthy-ego regularly also suggests intentions by which you can give ‘quietly’ or ‘privately’. While anonymity is admirable, this type of generosity can also be carefully structured so as to not interfere with a busy ‘personal’ life.
P: Are you saying that ‘me-first’ compassion actively separates my personal life from the full burden of responsibility for my favorite causes?
MQ: This is very often the case. Such ‘giving’ frequently arises after other great attainments have perhaps failed to deliver contentment. Unfortunately, all the philanthropy in the world won’t appease your unease when your intentions are in any way persuaded by the little-self. “It's actually, I think, more honest to say we're rock stars, we're havin' it large, we're havin' a great time and don't focus on charity too much — that's private; justice is public.”4
EVOLUTIONARY POINTER: The ego-mind merely pretends to care about humanitarian issues.
MQ: The fleeting motives of conditioned kindness compound dire consequences because there is rarely sufficient follow-through to provide permanent resolutions. Charity will remain conclusively impotent until the ego is removed as its director, both privately and publically.
Peony’s Story: Peony was a famous Hollywood movie star. She fell in love with an English actor while shooting a movie with him in India. Together they decided to start a charity to care for orphans there. The couple enrolled dozens of other celebrities to add their voices and funds to this project. The results were magnificent and even the critical press was enamored at their selfless acts. However, when this couple broke up a few years later and moved on to other partners, neither one wanted to assume sole responsibility for the organization they had started. The fund-raising dinners came to an end and the support dwindled. Soon, all traces of this once thriving organization had all but disappeared. The ones who were affected by this the most were the children in India who wondered why their care packages stopped coming.
MQ: While at the outset of this project, the actors’ intentions appeared to be pure, their subsequent breakup revealed that sustaining their promise to the orphans was less important than their personal goals. In the unawakened state, the intentions of the malevolent little-mind always overtake what was once considered to be a really wonderful idea.
P: So, even though the ego says it wants to save the world, it really can’t.
MQ: Not in the least. The ego feigns worldcentric empathy, but can’t ever follow through because its intentions are all based on its cravings for ‘personal’ recognition, affirmation and even immortality. An awakened person’s perspective on the challenges facing this world has transcended the ego’s need to remain separate. Such an individual is now fully available, willing and able to respond to the plight of those who are suffering so unnecessarily.
EVOLUTIONARY POINTER: To save the world, you must first do a much harder thing: save yourself from a sole identification with the ego-mind.
P: But aren’t charities feeding millions today.
MQ: Yes, of course. And this reflects a glorious truth indeed. But, many millions more will starve tomorrow. According to a former director5 of the U.N. World Food Program—the world's largest charitable organization—the percentage of people who are hungry has decreased while the actual number of hungry people is increasing by about five million people per year. The World Bank estimates that with the current growth trends in the world population, by 2050, there will be a fifty per cent increase in the numbers of those living in poverty over that same statistic for the year 2000.
P: That’s two billion more starving people than the world is contending with today!
MQ: The generosity of the lesser-self can cure an injustice today, but a thousand new ones will appear tomorrow. This tenet of the ego’s dharma tells us: The resolution of world hunger is a multi-national matter, thus it is ultimately out of my hands, because, after all, I am only one person. One of the goals of this work is to allow you to come together, temporarily beyond ego, with 5, 50, 500, 5,000, 50,000 or 500,000 individuals who are now awakening to the realization of how the ego-mind has been driving our planet for thousands of years. Let’s now begin to form, deliver and sustain effective solutions.
P: So many of these organizations flaunt altruistic agendas that are primarily driven—unfortunately for those they profess to serve—not by the release of the many, but by the preservation of the one – the ego.
MQ: Indeed. The ego-mind has turned the ‘poor’, the ‘homeless’ and the ‘starving’ into objects that it uses to make its hosts feel good about itself. Interactions at this level of development are based on a limited perspective and reveal that the many are still one with the malignant ego-mind at a collective level.
EVOLUTIONARY POINTER: What is your universe of relevant relationships like today? Are they open, complete, passionate, replete with purpose and awakened potential; or are you best friends with the ego-mind? Be careful that you, too, do not get lost in the waiting room of life.
A new world begins when you and I can come together beyond ego-mind.
If you can truly be with me, there can’t be a problem that we can’t tackle and transcend.
